Services

Where do you start?

A good starting point is for one of our highly skilled consultants to visit and undertake an audit to identify your company’s current level of compliance with UK health and safety legislation.  We will then identify practical strategies to bring your company up to date. Providing you with the peace of mind that your health and safety risks are being adequately managed! See audits.

Our consultants are flexible and can work in a manner of different ways to best support your requirements.  If you’re a small-medium Company, this may be bi-weekly visits to act as your Company Health & Safety Manager. We’ll work in developing your existing Management Team.

Additionally, companies recognise that legally they are required to appoint a competent person to advise on Health and Safety matters. Some do not have sufficient resources internally within the business, so therefore instruct Salopian Health and Safety to act as their Competent Person. See Competent Persons.

Alternatively, with larger organisations who directly employ Health and Safety professionals, we will work with the teams delivering accredited Health and Safety Training or advising on the Company Health and Safety Strategy. See Training.

Please take a look at the services detailed below and contact us to discuss how we can help.

Audits

Our consultants will visit the premises and complete an initial evaluation of the systems and procedures already in place and compliance with current health and safety law.

If a weakness is identified within the system, we will provide an evaluation of what is required and an action plan to make the necessary improvements. This will be supported by consultancy to create the necessary policies, risk assessments and safe systems of work. At subsequent visits we will help you develop and embed the actions taken, and ensure continuing compliance through briefings, audits and inspections and via a range of training, providing action plans and guidance as necessary.

Having an independent auditor of your policies and procedures means that you get a reliable, unbiased report of findings and an objective action plan for improvement.

“Being new to a school environment, I found that Sarah’s service has been invaluable. The regular visits and the annual audit has assisted with The Academy’s H & S plan to eliminate all H & S issues. Sarah is on the ball and assists us in dealing with all H & S issues as they arise. I did not realise how important this part of my role would be, but with Sarah’s help and support, I have been able to gain a great deal of knowledge.

Recently, Sarah delivered a training session to myself and the site team, we found the delivery to be well presented, and easy to understand. Thank you for the excellent service that you have provided.”

Mrs M Young – Business Manager, Holly Hall Academy – Dudley.

Inspections

Regular health and safety inspections are vital to ensure risks are managed appropriately and to ensure that everyone is working in a safe manner. Ongoing monitoring is a fundamental part of any organisation’s health and safety management system. Ensuring it is fully implemented and adhered to.

We undertake thorough physical inspections of sites along with reviewing on-site documentation and provide detailed reports outlining observations, the overall level of risk along with practical recommendations.

Health and safety policies and procedures

An effective health and safety system improves a business, ensures compliance with health and safety legislation, and reduces legal costs and insurance premiums in addition to attracting new business and employees.

The starting point to implementing a robust system is to formulate the Health and Safety Policy and procedures that are bespoke to the company.

It is a legal requirement for businesses with five or more employees to have a Health and Safety policy.

Additional documentation that we can assist you with includes company procedures, method statements, safe systems of work and risk assessments.

“You would think that the business was her own. Sarah’s energy, drive and determination ensured the change of mindset needed to transform the health & safety culture.”

Mr M Griffiths – Technical Manager – Roil Foods.

Risk Assessments

Under UK law, all organisations with five or more employees are required to carry out written health and safety risk assessments covering all significant hazards. We can either carry out the risk assessments on your behalf or we can support you through the process by providing the appropriate documentation and training to your employees, providing them with the tools to undertake the risk assessments themselves.

Use the below as a checklist to ensure you have the required risk assessments:

  • Fire Risk Assessments
  • Manual Handling Risk Assessments
  • Repetitive Task Risk Assessments
  • Display Screen Equipment Risk Assessments
  • COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations) Risk Assessments
  • First Aid Risk Assessments
  • Workplace Transport Risk Assessments
  • Machinery Risk Assessments
  • Confined Spaces Risk Assessments
  • Work at Height Risk Assessments

Accident investigations

In the event that an accident or incident takes place, then we can assist with any investigation to identify the causes and suggest recommendations to ensure that a re-occurrence does not take place.  We can also assist in the reporting of the incident to the enforcing authority should this be required and provide support when liaising with the enforcing authorities.

Additionally, we offer Accident Investigation training to provide managers with the necessary tools should an incident occur.

Training

Salopian Health and Safety offer a comprehensive range of accredited health and safety training including IOSH courses.  We also create and deliver bespoke and specialist courses both at your workplace or at alternative training venues that meet our client’s specific needs. Examples of our face to face courses which are all tailored to include internal company procedures and documentation are:

Should a course that you require not be listed, contact us to discuss your requirements as the writing of bespoke courses is just one of our specialisms. Our training sessions aim to be interactive and encourage delegates to get involved which makes for a positive learning experience.  This style of learning has proven extremely beneficial for delegates retaining information which they then apply within their daily roles making a real difference.

“Salopian Health & Safety were delivering IOSH Managing Safely at Hitchen Foods when I joined the company in 2014. It quickly became clear to me after spending some time with Sarah and getting feedback from the candidates that the course was delivered in an engaging and informative way. The incorporation of company specific materials combined with Sarah’s experienced driven examples and her delivery style mean that all of our candidates benefit massively from attending the course and know how to apply their learnings during their day to day roles. Having people throughout the business who can do this has helped with the improvements we have seen in the H&S culture onsite. I would highly recommend Salopian Health & Safety to anyone looking to implement a high quality training programme.”

Mr C Short – Training Manager, Bakkavor Hitchen Foods.

Safety Representative Training

Want to improve the performance of your Safety Reps?

Do you want them to be proactive and identify solutions, rather than attending meetings with issues which should have already been resolved?

Have your Safety Reps ever received training in the responsibilities of a Safety Rep? Are they fully supported and given the right tools to perform their job?

We can help. We deliver bespoke Safety Rep courses including your documentation. Please just get in touch via email.

‘’I was extremely pleased with the training provided by Sarah. It was a great mix of slides, videos and interactive sessions. It was suitable for everyone present and Sarah brought everyone into the interactive sessions.

Since the delivery of training to our Safety Reps, we have seen a significant improvement in the engagement of the Reps. During our Safety Meetings Reps are now looking forward and suggesting proactive improvements, rather than always looking back and identifying issues that should have already been addressed. The training has undoubtedly proved to be very beneficial.’’

Competent persons

A Competent Person package that helps our clients win contracts!

Why do I need to appoint a Safety Consultant?

This service allows your company to comply with the statutory provision at a vastly reduced cost to employing a full-time health and safety manager, calling upon professional support as and when required, but still allowing you to designate Salopian Health & Safety as your ‘Competent Person’ for matters of Health and Safety.

Peace of mind

We will ensure that you have the correct systems and standards in place. You will have a friendly and flexible consultant who will understand and meet your health and safety needs, providing you with peace of mind that you are complying with your legal duties, reducing accidents and incidents to your workforce and others and reducing the possibilities of being prosecuted.

We pride ourselves on getting to know and understand your business requirements and developing a competent person health and safety package that is right for your business, in terms of supporting your needs and budget.

Authority Liaisons

Should you have any involvement with the enforcement authorities such as a site visit, you are likely to be ordered to implement various corrective actions from any contraventions identified.

Our team of fully qualified health and safety consultants can support you via an initial site meeting, identify specific requirements raised via the enforcement authority and fully support you in implementing the corrective actions along with future monitoring.

Occupational Hygiene

Personal Exposure Monitoring

Under the COSHH regulations, employers must assess the risks to health from using or generating hazardous substances. Additionally, they must also prove that the controls work to reduce personal exposures to acceptable levels. Our Occupational Hygienists can carry our personal monitoring to evaluate the level of exposure of workers to hazardous airborne materials in the workplace.

Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV) Inspections and Tests

Our Occupational Hygienists provide thorough examination and testing of LEV as required by the COSHH Regulations. This maximises the effectiveness of the LEV in order to prevent employees from developing irreversible lung disease from inhalation of harmful airborne contaminants. Some organisations use LEV to control airborne contaminants to comply with the law, some use it as a defence against litigation for industrial disease and some use it as good practice.

Noise Surveys

Too much noise exposure may cause a temporary change in hearing or a temporary ringing in the ears. These short-term problems usually go away within a few minutes or hours after leaving the noisy environment. However, repeated exposures to loud noise on a day to day basis can lead to permanent, incurable hearing loss, tinnitus or other health issues. Under The Control of Noise at Work Regulations any employer who undertakes work liable to expose any employees to noise at 80dB(A) or above a lower exposure action value, must make a suitable and sufficient assessment of the risk that noise poses to the health and safety of their employees.

Our Occupational Hygienists can visit site, undertake a workplace occupational noise monitoring survey and identify the measures needed in order to meet the requirements of the law by either eliminating or mitigating the exposure.

Hand Arm Vibration (HAV) Analysis

Every year, thousands of workers are made ill by hazardous substances and exposure to vibrating tools and equipment. Employers are responsible for taking effective measures to control exposure of employees and protect their health. Not only is it a necessity to the health and wellbeing of employees, but these measures can also improve production and maximise the lifetime of tools and equipment.

Under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations employers are required to protect both employees and others who may be exposed to hazardous substances and vibration by ensuring that monitoring procedures are in place to ensure their safety.

We offer the complete service in HAV analysis which helps you to effectively monitor and control vibration exposure of your employees. Our Occupational Hygienists will perform on site measurement of your vibration levels. We are proactive in helping you to implement control measures to reduce vibration exposure, including recording exposure times and categorising tools into vibration banding groups.
